ARTICLE ON RAO,S STUDY HABIT INVENTORY
ABSTRACT
Study habits are the ways that you study- the habits that you have formed during your school years. Study habits can be good ones, or bad ones. Good study habits include being organized, keeping good notes, reading your text book, listening in class and working everyday. Bad study habits includes skipping class, not doing your works, watching TV or playing vedio games instead of studying and losing your works.Study habits of every students is one of the most important factors that affect his or her understanding regarding a certain subject. It means, if a student possess poor study habits , she has a greater chance of getting failing grades, if compare to students who has good study habits. But “habit” as it was defined from the introduction to psychology, means “a learned, or fixed way of behaving to satisfy a given motive”.
INTRODUCTION
Rao’s study habits inventory(1976) developed and standardized by Gopal Rao was used to test the study habits and collect the data for present investigation. Questionnaire method was used to test the study habits and collect the data for present investigation. Often parenys and teachers are at a loss to understand the reason for the discrepancy between the ability of the children and their actual accomplishment. Atleast part of the contribution to the condition is likely to come from poor study. Study habits has been defined as “the sum total of all the habits, determined purposes, and enforced practices that the individual uses in order to learn. It is necessary for the students to develop special study habits and skills.
ITEM COLLECTION
The students of the IX,X,&XI grades from the schools were asked to write sentences describing their methods of study. Teachers of the school were requested to furnish a few statement describing the most common study practices of the pupil in their school.
 As long list of more specific item were obtained through an examination of the literature on subject. The statement thus critically analysed.the list of item thus collected from various sources were then combained and compared with the study habits which are based on the psychological principles of effective learning and remembering.
PURPOSE
The main purpose of this questionnaire is not analyse present habits & help to improve study habits of children.
AIM
To find out the level of study habits of students.
METHOD
The questionnaire method was used for study. The test was conducted among the standard IX students of QUEEN MARY’S ENGLISH MEDIUM SCHOOL,MUDICKAL. There were 40 items in inventory. Among them 15 questions are negative and the rest of were positive. Copies of Rao’s study Habits Inventory were given to the students and were asked to answer them. They were to put a tick mark according to the scores. They were told that “main purpose of this questionnaire is not analyse your present habits and help to improve your study habits. Your answer will be kept confidential.What you answer has nothing to do with your class marks. So free to answer all questions frankly. Then according to it, the students marked their answer.
The study was conducted among 40 students. And it was found that out of them, 28 students had good study habits and rest had bad study habits. Through this test the student with poor study habits can know about themselves and can thus lead to improvement of their study habits. The students who scored above 125 have good study habits and the ones who scored below have bad study habits.
The descriptive answers of the students were converted into quantitative data by assigning arbit weight as follows:

The shows that how scoring is done according to the negative and positive questions. There were 40 questions and out of them, 15 were negative questions.
RESULT
Out of the 40 students the highest score was 153 and the lowest score was 100.
DISCUSSION
After the Rao’s psychological test, the student Hareesh.P.V who got the highest score 153, and the lowest score was 100 given Yousuf Salim. These scores state that IX C standard Hareesh.P.V. who followed a good study habits in that class compared to ather students and also Yousuf Salim who followed the bad study habits acoording to the Rao’s study habit test. So average score obtained by the class is 133.22. so this psychological Rao’s study habits inventory test were given to realize their study habits and help to improve or modified their study habits.
CONCLUSION
It can be concluded that Hareesh P.V. with the score 153 has the best study in the class under study and the student with the score 100 that is, yousuf Salim has the lowest study habit.
